One year ago Benedetto Giallongo bought his first Audi Melges 20 and won the Credit Suisse Primo Cup in 2009. This year, he reigns supreme again but with two important differences, the crew has matured substantially and the competition is more fierce than ever. WINTER SERIES & TUNE-UPS
• The Italian Winter Series is almost complete with the final event taking place on February 20-21. Teams will be focusing on strategies, tactics, training on Saturday and as many as five races are scheduled on Sunday.

2010 Miami Winter Series Event No. 2, February 19-20

Coming on strong and quick is part two of the 2010 Audi Melges 20 Miami Winter Series. Happening on February 19-20 and hosted by the fantastic Coconut Grove Sailing Club and supported by Miami Shake-A-Leg, fourteen teams are expected to attend. Have you submitted your entry? Register Now!

Adding more bang for the buck, Melges Performance Sailboats’ Andy Burdick will be organizing practice racing on Friday, February 19 starting at 2 p.m. on the bay. Calling all Audi Melges 20 racers — get ready for some great tune up! On Saturday, a post race press conference is scheduled and technical talk on Saturday.

With one event completed and two to go, Jeff Ecklund currently leads the series and will return with his winning STAR team for Event No. 2. Reigning U.S. National Champion Eric Wynsma on Superfly is in second and Robert Wilber on Cinghiale is third. View Current Standings

New ISAF Approved Class Rules Now Online

The new ISAF approved Audi Melges 20 Class Rules have been published. These rules are effective immediately and everyone should take the time to review changes that have occurred. There are quite a few throughout the document and while we encourage everyone to review the new rules document in its entirety, here is a list of the major changes:

• Mainsheet purchase has been amended to a minimum of 3:1 purchase. (C.9.6)
• Tapered sheets are now allowed for jib and main. (C.9.6)
• Optional design purchase systems to allow easier shroud car movement are allowed. (C.6.1)
• Helm rule wording has been updated. (Appendix 8)
• Sail button royalty for all sails and installed by sailmakers. (G.2.4 & Appendix 3)
• Sail limitation marks wording updated. (I.2)

2010 Audi Melges 20 European Sailing Series

The second year of the Audi Melges 20 Sailing Series is going to be simply amazing. In addition to an incredible line-up of series regattas, they will all take place in some of Italy’s most beautiful locations — Lerici, Scarlino, Porto Rotondo and Rimini. The class is also looking forward to the Audi Melges 20 Gold Cup Regatta on July 22-25 where 40 boats from as far away as the U.S., Britain and Austria are expected to compete.

Audi Melges 20 Fleet Is Growing In Australia

The Audi Melges 20 officially has a firm grip on Australia! Just recently, it completed participation at the 2010 Audi Victoria Week, a phenomenal event where over 400 boats competed (more than 4,000 sailors) sailing over 19 classes and divisions. The Audi Melges 20 raced the Bundaberg Rum National Sports Boat division where it placed fifth out of 23 boats. A total of 8 races were competed with Heath Walters at the helm of Scooter Central winning Race 4, never finishing outside of the top ten for the entire series!

Adding to the excitement is the forthcoming Sydney Harbor Regatta on March 6-7 that will feature the Audi Melges 20. Hosted by the Middle Harbor Yacht Club participation is sure to increase as other fleets such as the Melges 24 and Melges 32 are flourishing.
