The 2014-15 Miami Winter Series is in the books and now its on to the U.S. National Championship taking place in Charleston, SC at Sperry Charleston Race Week! Congratulations to Marc Hollerbach and his Fu team comprised of Jonathan McKee and Ben Allen as they prevailed to win the overall Miami Winter Series title for the first time ever! Kudos to runners up - Cesar Gomes Neto on Portobello, Michael Kiss on Bacio and most especially to overall Corinthian Champion Brian Hill and his Atlas crew of Adam Burns and John Goller. The 2014-15 season marked the sixth year of the circuit being hosted by Coconut Grove Sailing Club (CGSC). With a few social format tweaks and champagne conditions at each event, it was the best Series to date!

MEASUREMENT UPDATE
We, the Audi Melges 20 North American (NA) Board, along with the Technical Committee and Melges USA continue to work collaboratively ensuring that all owners are aware how important the one design aspect of the class is and the significance of its ISAF International Class designation. This includes the limitations that such a designation places upon every Audi Melges 20 owner worldwide, as well as the measurement process and procedures that we will utilize now and into the future to uphold the spirit of one-design racing.

We previously outlined and clarified that boat modification rules (which are a vital part of our Class) are available for full review online at melges20.com. That said, the NA Board and Technical Committee are pleased to inform that we will be utilizing a three-pronged process for all sanctioned events to ensure we maintain the highest quality level of sailing, true one-design spirit and that all owners are treated fairly:

  1. AT EVERY CLASS SANCTIONED EVENT, each registered owner (and team accordingly), will sign an Owners Declaration for that event as part of the registration process, confirming that their boat measurement certificate remains valid,
  2. A Class Measurer may be asked by the Board to attend any sanctioned event and registered boats may be selected for measurement prior to the commencement of racing, and...
  3. Random spot checks may occur during a sanctioned regatta after racing.

Please see the following section regarding measurement and its details taking place at the 2015 U.S. National Championship in Charleston, SC on April 16-19.

We have heard from you and our goal is to maintain our great one design class where skill and sheer brilliance determine the final results.

EXCITING & EXTRAORDINARY FORTHCOMING EVENTS

2015 U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP | SPERRY CHARLESTON RACE WEEK
APRIL 16-19 | CHARLESTON, SC

The U.S. National Championship will be hosted by the Carolina Yacht Club (CYC) with arrangements to include launching, berthing and haul out for the entire fleet. Directly after racing, off-the-water social events will commence at CYC, followed by all of the Sperry Charleston Race Week (S-CRW) social activities at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina. In 2014, we tested this to see if it was easier, safer and more convenient for teams to set-up and crane launch at CYC, then berth there for the duration of the event.

When combined with the ability to successfully haul out post-event and pack-up at CYC the owners participating concluded that this was a great way for our Class to race at S-CRW.

All owners and teams attending this regatta need to prepare as new measurement protocols will be in full effect, specifically:

  1. International and USA measurers will be in attendance at this regatta,
  2. Every boat along with their keel and rudder will be weighed. Hiking straps, shroud reinforcement, mast step position, keel position will all be checked,
  3. Measurers will be provided with each boat's Shop Measurement Form (SMF) by Melges USA and all relevant measurements will be checked against such,
  4. Marc Hollerbach owner of USA-21 Fu is also our Technical Committee Chair, and unfortunately is unable to sail in this event, but has graciously agreed to act as the owner liaison for the measurement process. Marc will work with each owner and the class measurers to ensure the process is fair, efficient and effective. By the way... the real rumor that Marc hurt his back carrying home all of the hardware he received for winning the 2015 Winter Series is totally true!
  5. To ensure an efficient process is followed, there will be a measurement slot available for each boat. Each owner is encouraged to sign up as soon as possible for a measurement time slot with IAM20CA Admin, Joy Dunigan. Slots will be available on a first come, first serve basis - so do this today!

Everyone is gently reminded that the entry deadline for this event is Friday, April 10. If you are planning to race, or know someone who is not signed up yet please have them do so ASAP via the Official Event Yachtscoring Website.

2015 CANADIAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
MAY 29-31 | PORT CREDIT YACHT CLUB; TORONTO, CANADA

The 2015 Canadian National Championship will be held on May 29-31 and hosted by the fantastic Port Credit Yacht Club (PCYC). Any owner interested in attending this awesome sanctioned event prior to heading West for the Pacific Coast Championship and Worlds is encouraged to contact Rhonda Joyce (CAN-214, Grinning Streak) to make arrangements for storage, launching and hauling easy. We asked the Canadian fleet to hold their Nationals at this time of year given the timing of Worlds in San Francisco. This will be an amazing time to race in Toronto as typically the area experiences a strong spring wind pattern so for sure we will see Audi Melges 20s rippin' around Lake Ontario. In 2016, we do anticipate that the Canadian Nationals will return to its usual mid-September time slot. Stay close to melges20.com as a formal announcement regarding online registration, etc.

We would like to remind everyone that the Canadian Nationals is only one event of the five-part Lake Ontario Series. The Canadian Fleet would love to have anyone interested join the fleet for a great summer of racing. Further details regarding storage for the entire run of events can be made via Rhonda Joyce or Fleet Captain Justin Quigg.

2015 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
SEPTEMBER 30 - OCTOBER 3 | SAN FRANCISCO YACHT CLUB; SAN FRANCISCO, CA

The 2015 World Championship scheduled for September 30-October 3 and hosted by the San Francisco Yacht Club (SFYC) in San Francisco, California is shaping up nicely with the fleet to be berthed together at the SFYC. As an added incentive for teams to travel to the event we have added three additional days of non-sanctioned fleet racing for all teams. The pre-worlds racing format will be less formal than Worlds, but nonetheless a great tune up for every team in an effort to "up their game" and enjoy the San Francisco yacht racing experience to the fullest degree.

Exclusively for the 2015 Worlds, it is our intention to provide 2 complimentary Sail Limitation Marks (SLMs) to each team entered. These special World Championship SLMs will be provided to you at the start of the event and may be used for the Worlds competition. This is consistent and in line with the rule proposal currently with ISAF.

In order to assist with planning and budgeting for the event, please advise IAM20CA Admin, Joy Dunigan with your team details regarding your attendance at the event.

SAIL LIMITATION MARKS
We are pleased to announce that the Sail Limitation Mark (SLM) proposal approved by the board is now with ISAF for approval. The proposal retains participation as a key element of the system and in recognition of the fact that we now have a World Championship that more and more owners are attending in multiple regions, the arbitrary cap on SLMs has been removed and replaced by a participation cap. This new rule also removes the imbalance between a one boat owner and a multiple boat owner that was imbedded in the old rule.
